Why walking is good for you:

10 reasons to put on the hiking boots

Walking is often praised for its health benefits, but why is it actually so good for you? The beauty of walking is that it is so simple: you step out your front door and you can start right away. It is also one of the cheapest ways to exercise. Other than a pair of comfortable shoes and clothes, you don't need much else. And the best part is: you are outside enjoying nature. Because walking (unlike running, for example) is easy to maintain, you can burn more energy in the long run. In addition, hiking is little injury prone, so you can feel free to do it several times a week. In this article, we list 10 reasons why walking is so good for both your body and mind. Put on your shoes and hit the trail!

1. You improve your fitness

Walking is a great way to improve your fitness. According to the Dutch Standard for Healthy Exercise, we should get half an hour of moderately intensive exercise every day. Although gentle walking has little effect on your fitness, brisk walking increases your heart rate and breathing, which contributes to a stronger heart and better blood circulation. This reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. Your lungs also benefit, as you train your lung capacity to absorb and transport more oxygen through your blood vessels.

2. Good for your bones

Walking is excellent for your bones. Using muscles, bones and cartilage stimulates the production of new bone cells. This helps prevent bone decalcification (osteoporosis). A brisk walk helps keep your bones strong, and your cartilage firm. This is especially important as you age.

3. You strengthen your muscles

By walking regularly, you keep your muscles in top shape, including your heart - after all, that's a muscle too! Want to strengthen your leg muscles extra? Then hike up hilly terrain, for example, to help your muscles develop.

4. Preventing obesity

Walking is a great way to maintain weight or lose weight. Because you can walk for a relatively long time, you burn a lot of energy and fat. Of course, it is important to keep an eye on your nutrition as well. How many calories you burn depends on your pace, the length of your walk and your body weight. On average, one hour of walking (at a speed of 5 mph) burns about 300 calories.

5. Relaxation for your mind

Walking in nature is not only good for your body, but also for your mind. It helps organize your thoughts, or set aside negative thoughts by focusing on your surroundings or your own cadence. This relaxation has positive effects on your physical health, such as through better sleep, which makes you feel better physically.

6. Increased creativity

Beethoven took long walks through the Viennese valleys to find inspiration for his compositions. Hiking often helps solve problems or find new ideas. According to research from Stanford University, walking stimulates creativity. Even a short eight-minute walk can help refresh your mind and gain new insights.

7. Improved mood

Walking produces dopamine, the "happiness hormone," which makes you feel euphoric. The more often you walk, the faster the effect is noticeable. Moreover, the fresh air of nature has a positive influence on your mood and energy level. Want a really good breath of fresh air? Then seek out a beach walk! Research from North Carolina State University shows that walking by the sea can help prevent psychological and physical complaints.

8. Extra vitamin D

A walk outdoors automatically means more sunlight, which is important for the production of vitamin D. This vitamin plays a crucial role in strengthening your bones and teeth and supports your immune system and mental health. Sufficient vitamin D lowers the risk of mental illness.

9. Structure for your day

By making walking a regular part of your daily routine, you give structure to your day. Especially if you spend a lot of time behind a desk, a daily walk will help you stay active and refresh your mind.

10. Social interaction

Hiking is also a perfect way to meet new people and promote social interaction. It can be a fun way to engage in conversation, exchange thoughts or just enjoy nature together. Research shows that many people feel lonely. Hiking offers an approachable way to break that loneliness while improving your mental health.

Now get to work!

You won't notice the benefits of walking until you go out regularly. Make it a habit to walk at least half an hour daily. This not only helps you stay physically fit, but also mentally bright and happy. The Health Council recommends a minimum of 2.5 hours of moderate-intensity exercise per week as an adult, spread over several days. You should feel like your body is in action - your heart rate speeds up and you may start to sweat a little. So, put on your shoes and start walking today!

Dogs

A recurring topic, unfortunately! At our beautiful campground, we all want to enjoy clean trails and fields. Cleaning up dog waste is a small effort, but makes a big difference. By taking responsibility together, we ensure that both people and four-legged friends can enjoy a fresh and clean environment. Let's help each other and remind ourselves to always have a bag for emergency on hand. That way we will make our campground a place that everyone can be proud of!

Walking together

Every Saturday at 09:00 we start a joint walk from the reception. Walking is good for you, and of course together is always more sociable than alone! Put on your old shoes or boots and walk with us. We'll make a nice walk of about an hour, so you'll be back just before coffee time. It is an informal activity and you decide each time if you want to walk with us or not. We always discuss on the day itself where we will go, for example through the Hulkestein Forest or around the Laakse Slenk. Note: dogs are not allowed.

Flevo Nature Interest Group (BFN).

The Flevo Nature Interest Group (BFN) is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year! A time to reflect on our work and the role we play within the Flevo Nature community.

We are a group of volunteers who work enthusiastically to represent the interests of guests at Flevo Natuur. When there are questions or problems, we are ready to bring them to the attention of the N.N.T. In addition, we inform all our members through a newsletter, which is sent at least four times a year. Nevertheless, we notice that there are still many guests who are not aware of our existence and activities.

To change that, the board has decided to temporarily open the BFN's website to all guests. This way you can discover for yourself what the BFN does and the benefits of membership. Take a moment to take a look at our website and who knows, maybe you'll want to sign up as a member too!

Website: www.bfn-info.nl

Signing up is easy at info@bfn-info.nl or by filling out the registration form on the website. The membership fee for an entire year is only €12.50. Partner members can join for free.

May we welcome you as a new member soon?

Welcome Carine & And what comes next in the pharmacy?

Hello guests of Flevo Nature,

My name is Carine Braam and since the beginning of February I work in this beautiful vacation park at the reception. The first weeks have been good so now it is time to introduce myself to you.

It's great to be able to work at Flevo Nature! I myself have been a guest of Flevo Nature several times and of course I continue to do so. Naturism runs like a thread through my life, both at home and abroad. At the end of 2023, after a beautiful RV trip through Europe, I moved to Almere Oosterwold. A unique and new rural area where I can live together with husband and dog greener, more sustainable and outside the Randstad. In my spare time I am among other things active as a volunteer, I provide meditations with singing bowls and I like to visit the sauna.

I look forward to meeting you soon!

Carine

Pharmacy

A new unit has been placed on the plaza, which currently has the word "pharmacy" on it. It is great that there have been questions about the possible arrival of a pharmacy at Flevo Nature. The administrator of the Facebook page Positive Flevo also posted a message:
"There is a building, which a passing Rotterdam resident immediately called the 'aquarium'. No one knows what it will be. Even the administrators' in-depth research has not yet yielded any answers. It's a fun conversation piece for the chatting sauna. The secret lies in the management's desk drawer. Exciting! What do you guys think? Care facility? Sports center? Pancake house?."

Bamboo

Nearly 100 responses came in, with all kinds of ideas. We will keep it exciting for a while. Above you can see a picture of the material that will be used. We won't reveal more 😂, but it will be really beautiful!

Supermarket contact

Unfortunately, the superintendent, Vincent, is currently unavailable by phone due to a technical error. If you want to ask him anything, you can send an e-mail to: uwkruidenier@outlook.com.

Cows at the Laakse Slenk

The cows are no longer returning to the Laakse Slenk. Meanwhile, the Forestry Commission has removed all the fences. We asked our forester, Lisa Wassenaar, about the situation:

"For the management evaluation of the area, several issues were examined, including water management and the effect of previous measures taken on the intended developments. The Forestry Commission went out into the field with experts in the field of pocket forests to seek advice. A student also conducted graduate research on these issues.

A comparison was made between an ungrazed part of the forest and a part where grazing was still occurring. The conclusion was that grazing led to species-poor and trivial vegetation, which is not desirable. We strive for a biodiverse and sustainable forest. Grazing inhibits forest rejuvenation and makes the forest floor vulnerable, whereas undisturbed development of the forest floor and vegetation is desirable.

In addition, the cows versed the water crassula, an invasive exotic species harmful to aquatic life.

Finally, the dog ban remains in effect in this area."

Lisa Wassenaar, Senior Forester Public.

Flevo Nature - N.N.T. bv

Most of you may already know, but N.N.T. stands for Het Nederlands Nationaal Naturistenterrein, the official name of our vacation park as registered in the trade register. The name we use for our guests is Flevo Natuur. Sometimes confusion can arise, for example when paying by bank transfer, because the name and number do not match.

Flevo Nature takes its name from the province of Flevoland, in which the park is located. Flevoland is named after the historic Flevo Lake (Lacus Flevo), which was named in 44 AD by the Roman geographer Pomponius Mela. The park opened its doors on July 1, 1978, and has since grown from a barren polder to a green vacation park.

Flevo library

You may have already heard: the Flevo-theek has moved! Corrie and her helpers are extremely happy with the new location. They worked hard to make the move happen without interruption. The result is worth it! We encourage you to visit soon, because it is really worth it.

Message from the Flevo-theek volunteers:

"FLEVO-THEEK MOVED
On Saturday, March 29, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., we hope to welcome you to our renovated location across from the restaurant. Stop by for a drink and a bite to eat!

We are extremely happy with our new home and the completely new interior. Over the past few weeks we have worked hard to assemble over 65 cabinets and move the entire collection, which went smoothly thanks to the help of volunteers. We are now completely ready for the new season and are open every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon from 4:00 to 5:00 pm. For books, puzzles and games everyone is very welcome in the new Flevo-theek.
See you March 29th!"
Greetings Corrie, Judy and Paul

Fiber optic work started

We have started the excavation work for the installation of the fiber optic ring line at Flevo Natuur. This will improve internet stability. During this work, we are also making preliminary adjustments to the infrastructure.

We understand that this may cause some temporary inconvenience and will do our best to keep it to a minimum. Thank you in advance for your understanding and patience!

Please note that this work is for the general infrastructure of the park and therefore not for individual annual sites.

Sculpture

Veronica Vos, who runs the sculpture courses, is currently enjoying her vacation elsewhere for a while. As soon as she returns, we will consult with her to find a new location for the sculpting activities. We are confident that this will work out again.

Energy Rates

In January, we sent an email to our annual guests with the energy rates as of the last meter reading. However, that email did not yet mention the rate for return delivery. This tariff is €0.10 per kWh (almost 50% more than other suppliers), in case you supply more energy than you consume.

The rate for energy for (pre)seasonal guests in 2025 is €0.47 per kWh.

New Rental Accommodations

In December, we announced that new rental chalets were coming, and we are happy to report that the Flevo Suites have now been installed! These modern chalets offer a great new option for our rental guests. Although the suites are already in place, there is still some work to do before they are completely finished.

Camera Stickers

As announced in the last newsletter, camera stickers are now available at the front desk. These stickers can help you ensure extra privacy during your stay. They can be picked up free of charge. We encourage everyone to take advantage of them so that together we can contribute to a safe and comfortable environment for all. Soon the stickers will also be available at the pool area.

Flevo's Pen

"I am Michael Sarink and I passed the pen on from Jeanette, whom I regularly meet at the Saturday morning walk. I, along with my wife Ingrid, have a chalet on the quail. (Our fourth spot in over 5 years, but more on that later).

My first naturist vacation was in 1990, and it was at Flevo Nature. As a single parent with two children ages 2 and 6, I decided to take the plunge into naturist camping, and I have never regretted it. On the contrary! However, when I arrived at Flevo with two kids in a fully loaded car, and saw all these naked people walking around, I got a bit scared. But then I took off my clothes, put up my tent and after a few hours I was used to it. I went back a few more times for a short vacation with the tent or the caravan borrowed from my parents, but eventually I went more and more often to France, the country where I am very much chez moi. After several campsites, including in the Ardeche, I ended up at the Couderc, in the Dordogne, in 1996 and that was really coming home for me. (So that was coming home to a country where you feel at home.) I have been a regular there, all these years, and since 2007 with Ingrid. Lately we have been going that way a little less often. Of course, that also has to do with the beautiful place, which we have at Flevo Natuur.

Flevos pen

In 2019, we had the idea to see if a seasonal or annual pitch at Flevo Natuur would be something for us. Going to the Couderc twice a year is great fun, but we actually thought that six months of waiting before we could go again was quite long.

Each time, when we drove back to Holland, we were blood-soaked, and the first 300 kilometers usually passed in somber silence.

We went to the open house and were immediately sold. (And so was the mobile home at the Valken, which we had viewed!) No more waiting six months, but every Friday, after work, pack up the car, go to Flevo, get the bags in the wagon, go to the caravan, unpack, and armed with the strippenkaart (eleven get ten pay) go to the Grand Café for the weekly snack. (Or was it daily snack?) Great, what a feast! Alas: the strip card is no more, those days are gone. But we can still be found at the bar on Friday afternoons, and we still find it a very cozy place.

Okay, so we had a great time every weekend, time passes, and before you know it, 8 months have passed. High time for another mobile home! Also at the Falcons but a little bigger and more luxurious. When we had just spent a week in our "new" caravan, corona broke out. Although everything had to close (especially the catering we missed) we found in this situation Flevo the best place to stay. And, when you are here more often, and for longer periods of time, including in winter, you need a better insulated cabin, so then you switch from a mobile home to a chalet. We found this one at the Foxes and there we lasted (yes, you won't believe it!) almost three years. It was a beautiful spot at the edge of the woods, but difficult to reach in bad weather, also because Ingrid was getting worse on her feet.

Searched for a chalet on the paved road and found it on the Quail. We have been here for a year now, and no!!!: it is not for sale (yet)............

Meanwhile, we are still thoroughly enjoying ourselves here and hope to do so for years to come. I pass the pen to Antoinette Molenkamp-van Roon".
